About Lions Clubs
International
The International Association of Lions Clubs began during World War I as the dream of Chicago businessman Melvin Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.
That was the beginning of the LIONS (Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safey), which quickly expanded around the nation and to other countries.
Aiding blind and visually impaired individuals
In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the international convention of Lions Clubs, where she challenged Lions around the world to become "knights of the blind." Since that time, the Lions Club has grown to more than 1.3 million members in 45,000 clubs in 202 countries and geographic areas, all dedicated to fulfilling the Lions motto:
"WE SERVE."
